War Rock
Strongly reminiscent of other modern war games, such as Battlefield 2 and Counter-Strike, War Rock is a net-based multiplayer first-person shooter that can be played for free, even on a relatively modest "rig" (as the gamers say).

Most missions are accomplished as part of a loose team. Your combat choices are: Close Quarters combat on small maps; Urban Ops, featuring medium maps; and Battle Group, with the largest areas to cover. Vehicles like tanks, helicopters, especially motorcycles add interest. The bikes get stuck in the strangest places, often because their riders enjoy using them to perform insane, death-defying stunts.

Everyone begins the game with 30,000 Dinar, the in-game currency, as well as hand-to-hand combat skills, a Colt .45, and a couple of other items relative to their branch of service. The Engineer carries a wrench that allows him to repair vehicles, for example, while the Medic (the lone, midriff-baring female in the bunch) has a medical kit that can be used to heal herself or others. The Heavy Trooper carries anti-tank mines and missile-launching Panzerfauste. One odd aspect of War Rock: To upgrade a weapon, ordinarily you can't buy it outright, but must rent it for anywhere from three days to a month.

The basic game is free. However, bonuses--ranging from extra Dinar to better items to extra experience--are available to paying customers, as you might expect. A month's worth of extras ranges from $6 to $15.
